REVIEW – Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda

Last year, I had the pleasure of reviewing the excellent Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch system to celebrate the thirty-fifth anniversary of the beloved plumber. This year, it’s the turn of the hero in a green tunic, as we celebrate three and a half decades of adventuring through Hyrule and beyond, with The Legend of Zelda Game & Watch system from Nintendo.

There are many similarities between last year’s Super Mario Bros. release, and it comes just in time for the holiday season. But how does this one compare? Is it the perfect gift for that Zelda fan in your life? Or a crushing disappointment that makes the CDi games look like a masterpiece? Let’s go on an adventure…

Feature: The Significance of Metroid Dread

During the E3 2021 Nintendo Direct, Nintendo revealed an upcoming title that appears to have come as a surprise and shock to many Nintendo fans. For the first time in nineteen years, they announced a brand new “2D” Metroid title in the long running series.

Metroid Dread, for those uninitiated, is a sequel to Metroid Fusion, which was released on the Game Boy Advance system in 2002. Dread is a direct sequel to this title, the fifth traditional game and the first new story for this style of game in almost two decades. In this feature, I will attempt to express why I feel the announcement of Dread is a massive deal for Metroid fans, Nintendo supporters and gamers of all kinds.

NintyBeats – Donkey Kong’s 40th Anniversary

2021 has been a celebratory year for Nintendo, with many franchises reaching huge anniversary milestones, such as Pokémon’s 25th, The Legend of Zelda’s 35th, and Metroid’s 35th. But Donkey Kong’s 40th anniversary, when it is arguably a franchise that was significant to Nintendo’s place in the video game scene today, was criminally overlooked. Over the past four decades, the series has given us so many great moments, from his original arcade outing, all the way to Tropical Freeze (at the time of writing)!

There are simply too many great musical pieces from the series to list, but below, we have attempted to highlight a few of them.

REVIEW – New Pokémon Snap

It has been twenty-two years since HAL Laboratory and Pax Softnica developed Pokémon Snap for the Nintendo 64 and, for the longest time, Pokémon fans like myself have wanted to see a new addition to the series. But as the years went on, I began accepting it as a bit of a pipe dream. So when New Pokémon Snap was announced back in June 2020, it came as a bit of a shock! Did they actually do it? Are they really making Pokémon Snap 2?

Please read my review below to find out whether its successor captured my excitement, or was I left feeling a bit negative.

NintyBeats – Valentine’s Day Special 2021

February 2021’s addition of NintyBeats is yet another opportunity to share some Nintendo music that I truly love. In past versions of these features, I have written about music from some of the first Nintendo games I was introduced to, music that had a romance theme to them, and my favourite music from the Animal Crossing and Metroid series. You might be wondering if there are even more themes that I love, and the answer would be: of course!

Today I want to share an additional four themes that reaffirm my love for video games from Nintendo.
