REVIEW – LIVE A LIVE

It certainly feels as though Square Enix have been around since the Stone Age. With that, comes a huge catalogue of both quality and diverse games. Most recently, Square Enix have been experimenting with their 2D-HD engine, which contains a blend of 2D sprites with beautiful 3D backgrounds. With the likes of Octopath Traveller and Triangle Strategy gracing our screens, Square Enix are now delving into their archives and shining a torch on Live A Live, a niche game which previously only saw a release in Japan. Now remade gracefully for the Nintendo Switch and finally localised for the west, does Live A Live stand the test of time?

REVIEW – Kao the Kangaroo

Back when 3D platformers were all the rage, Kao the Kangaroo saw its debut in the year 2000 on both PC and Dreamcast. Players saw Kao journey through levels with his springy jump and signature punching techniques to beat up enemies. Unfortunately, the game received a mixed reception overall and we haven’t seen a new Kao the Kangaroo game since 2005. Originally announced on its 20th anniversary, Kao the Kangaroo finally returns to our living rooms. Have the years been kind to our Kangaroo friend, or is this game a total Knockout?

REVIEW – Mario Kart 8 DX – Booster Course (Wave 1)

Mario Kart 8 first graced our living rooms in May 2014 on the WiiU. Introducing anti-gravity mechanics, improving on the previous iterations of customisation and even being updated with DLC this was set to be one of the best in the series. Fast Forward to April 2017 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (MK8DX) was released on the Nintendo Switch, packaged with the DLC tracks from the WiiU version and an improved Battle Mode with new stages, items and more to more closely imitate the original Battle Mode.. Almost eight years after its initial release, MK8DX is now the best selling Mario Kart title and takes its place as Nintendo’s third best selling game ever. But that wasn’t enough – In a move that surprised everyone, Nintendo recently announced DLC which will eventually add forty-eight new courses to the game. Releasing eight courses at a time, fans will see six waves between now and the end of 2023. With the first wave just released, see what we had to say about this in our review!

REVIEW – Triangle Strategy

Strategy Role Playing Games (SRPGs) have seen a resurgence in recent years, and as a fan of the genre it pleases me to see companies like Square Enix creating brand new series such as Triangle Strategy. With a gleaming reputation for fantastic story driven Role Playing Games, anything developed by this company has the potential to be a hit. With that in mind, is Triangle Strategy the start of a new legacy?

REVIEW – Dynamite Headdy (Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack)

Following on from their success with Gunstar Heroes, Treasure liberally poured their creativity into Dynamite Headdy. This is a side-scrolling 2D platformer following a puppet named Headdy on his quest to stop an evil puppet king taking over the world. His only weapon? You guessed it, his head. In an already crowded market, does Dynamite Headdy rise head and shoulders above the rest, or does it fall short?

REVIEW – Gunstar Heroes (Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack)

Gunstar Heroes became an instant classic when it first released back in the early 90’s on the Sega Genesis. Gaming has moved on a lot since then, and while we embrace 4K gaming with photo-realistic graphics, is there still room to enjoy classics at a 4:3 aspect ratio?

REVIEW – Mario Kart 64 (Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack)

If the question was “Name a chaotic racing game that is almost guaranteed to make you lose friends”, the answer would almost certainly be “Mario Kart”. As the years go by, this only rings more true as the series has been incredibly creative in finding innovative ways to make the game fun for players of all levels. Mario Kart 64, originally released back in 1996, was the first 3D outing for the series and has now finally made its debut on the Nintendo Switch via the “Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) + Expansion Pack”. Check out what we thought in this review!
