REVIEW – Filament

A ship floats silently across the starry sky, the planet beneath swathed in an aura of pinks and blues… or would that be green? Aboard the vessel, our hero arrives, welcome to the mighty Alabaster of Filament Corp design.

Our story isn’t of action, nor of horrific sights, instead, it’s full of hope and puzzling lights. Does this game of Filament light up that bulb of the brain, or does it remain darkened, making this journey in vain? Find out in our review, after the break!

Cadence of Hyrule: Symphony of the Mask Review

Cadence of Hyrule already made waves for being a totally unexpected crossover between one of Nintendo’s biggest franchises and an indie darling, so it came as a surprise to many of us that even more was planned for the pipeline. The announcement of a season pass came out of nowhere, with a slew of new content being added to the game. The first parts of the pack added new characters and remixed music, but the really exciting bit was the final piece of the expansion, an entirely new story mode introducing a Skull Kid into the game. With a new play style in hand, does Symphony of the Mask live up to the expectations already set by the base game, or does it fall tone death to the melody?

REVIEW – Minoria

In the Kingdom of Ramezia, heretics branded as witches by the Sacred Office have taken over the royal castle and abducted Princess Amelia. Two nuns, Sister Semilla and Anna Fran, are tasked with infiltrating the now desecrated stronghold to rescue the princess and persecute the heretics involved. This serves as the basic outline to the plot of Minoria, a game that treads on the grey moral ground between religious fanaticism and the path of following with nature, which has been deemed sacrilege by higher powers. It’s a lot to take in for such a simple premise. But along the way, you have to ask yourself if it’s enough to carry the narrative forward or if it will stumble on its own lofty ambitions.

REVIEW – BoxBoy! + BoxGirl!

Nintendo are perhaps best known for their character-led franchises, with the likes of Mario, Donkey Kong and Kirby being mainstays on Nintendo consoles for many years. One of their lesser-known stars is BoxBoy, who made his debut on the 3DS in 2015 and went on to star in two sequels, also on the 3DS. Developed by HAL Laboratory (creators of Kirby), the BoxBoy series were roundly praised by critics but despite this never caught on in a big way, perhaps due in part to only being available on the e-Shop outside of Japan. The latest title in the series, BoxBoy + BoxGirl, brings the character to the Switch for the first time and this time he’s bringing BoxGirl along for the ride, but is it worth playing? Read on to find out more.

REVIEW – Cadence of Hyrule – Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda

We often get plenty of crossover games in this industry, where two companies come together to create something new by combining one IP with another, often leading to a genre blending experience. Nintendo isn’t exactly a stranger to this concept, having done a fair few crossovers over the years, particularly with Super Smash Bros. But they shocked us when they announced that they had partnered with an indie studio with one of their biggest IPs. By partnering with Brace Yourself Games they allowed them to combine the rhythm action of Crypt of the NecroDancer with the tried and true classic formula of The Legend of Zelda, leading to the inception of Cadence of Hyrule.

REVIEW – Paper Mario: The Origami King

To unfold and fold,
An entire world torn apart,
Paper puns are hard.

Ahem, while not the most eloquent haiku ever written, there are more pressing matters at hand, such as the unfolding of the Mushroom Kingdom itself in Paper Mario’s latest barmy adventure for Nintendo Switch.

Has Paper Mario: The Origami King got what it takes to uncrumple our Sticker Star tainted hearts, or is it better off chucking into the waste paper basket? Find out in our review after the break!
