REVIEW – Harmony of a Hunter: Returns

Thirty-five years ago, Metroid graced our screens and helped define the Metroidvania genre. Though the series has laid dormant for a fair while, and anniversaries generally not being acknowledged, Nintendo are now treating us to the first mainline entry to the series in over fifteen years: Metroid Dread. While we wait for that, however, Shinesparkers, the biggest Metroid fan site in Europe, wants to celebrate the series in style with their sixth album: Harmony of a Hunter: Returns.

The album, which releases today, is a celebration of Metroid’s musical history, reinvigorating the soundscape and giving a new perspective on the music involved. The album also goes back to their previous two Harmony of a Hunter projects, switching the tracks up further and also introducing some which never made the original cut. REVIEW – Save Me Mr Tako: Definitive Edition

Save Me Mr Tako: Definitive Edition has recently re-appeared on the Nintendo eShop. Initially released with some unfavourable reviews back in 2018, the Developer Christophe Galati set out to work hard on the feedback and “fix” the game. Galati then went his separate ways with the original Publisher and has now re-launched the Definitive Edition, published by Limited Run Games. 

This game lands itself in a competitive sea of platforming indie titles on the Nintendo Switch and those seeking a quality platformer may easily miss this title. With the re-launch, is it sink or swim for our little Octopus friend Mr Tako?

REVIEW – Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir & The Girl Who Stands Behind

Somewhere around 33 years ago, renowned creator of the Game Boy, Gunpei Yokoi, approached Yoshio Sakamoto, best known for his work with the Metroid franchise, to create a game with only a title as a suggestion. The title was “Famicom Shōnen Tanteidan” (Famicom Youth Detective Club) and it was to be developed for the Famicom Disk System exclusively in Japan. Drawing inspiration from horror films by Dario Argenta and 1983’s The Portopia Serial Murder Case, the project eventually manifested into two titles under the Famicom Detective Club banner; The Missing Heir and The Girl Who Stands Behind. Now they’ve been remade especially for the Nintendo Switch by esteemed visual novel studio Mages and localised officially into English for the first time. Do they hold up with the times, or fall behind their contemporary successors?

REVIEW – New Pokémon Snap

It has been twenty-two years since HAL Laboratory and Pax Softnica developed Pokémon Snap for the Nintendo 64 and, for the longest time, Pokémon fans like myself have wanted to see a new addition to the series. But as the years went on, I began accepting it as a bit of a pipe dream. So when New Pokémon Snap was announced back in June 2020, it came as a bit of a shock! Did they actually do it? Are they really making Pokémon Snap 2?

REVIEW – Harvest Moon: One World

As of late, farming simulation games seem to have been increasing in popularity, or have they always been popular and I’ve only just realised this? Either way, it is a bit odd that some gamers, myself included, crave the sort of game that simulates the hard work of farming. I suppose when you get to see your efforts grow to fruition fairly quickly without the actual physical input, farming can be pretty fun, even for the laziest individual… why are you staring at me?

Harvest Moon: One World is yet another entry into the genre. Not only that, but it is also the first new game in the series (not to be confused with Story of Seasons) for quite some time. Does the title bear the fruits of Natsume’s labour, or does barn cleanup sound more appetising? Find out in our review, after the break!

REVIEW – Bravely Default II

Bravely Default as a series is both brave in execution and yet somewhat typical by default. Heralded as a breath of fresh air for reinvigorating the classic RPG formula back in 2012-14, quite a bit has happened in the industry since, with a renaissance of Japanese RPGs hitting it big in the west again after falling out of favour throughout the seventh generation of home consoles. Escaping its handheld roots and now jumping to the hybrid system, this feels like a chance to both bring Bravely Default to a new audience and also to spark interest in the franchise yet again, after Bravely Second was deemed controversial as a sequel. Now set in an all-new world unconnected to the original two games, this is a fresh start as a sort of soft reboot.

REVIEW – SNK VS. CAPCOM: The Match of the Millennium

Originally released in 1999 on the obscure and short-lived NeoGeo Pocket Colour, SNK vs. Capcom: The Match of the Millennium was the first crossover title between the legendary companies, and it is wonderful to see that the game will be preserved and revived for the incomparably wider audience the Switch affords. The epic titling may contrast with its cutesy style, but the packed-to-the-brim crossover content and overall quality of the game do it justice!
